It's raining doctypes and validations

Why you should care about the doctype of your document

What's a doctype?

A valid HTML document declares what version of HTML is used in the document. The document type declaration names the document type definition (DTD) in use for the document as quoted from the w3c documentation.

So, as per definition, the doctype declares the version of html that you've used in your document. Why, ain't that nice?

Why should I care?

Back-end developers won't care much, except for those few occasions were they might be inclined to stumble through the pages using an xml-parser. Front-end developers however should care verry much...

Happy Cloggers talking on the web

Let's get the discussions going

Yeah, I got sick of wondering if anything was happening. I know I wasn't a true insider, I know I was watching from the sidelines and throwing in only 50% effort at best.

But I got sick of waiting. There's questions burning in my head to get answers. I can't change the world all alone and I knew that at least some of the people involved with http://happyclog.nl/ were interrested in getting more of a voice in our little country by the sea.

So, I stopped sitting on the side-line and took the initiative. I started a Happy Clog Google Group and went about trying to invite some of the happy clog members that I had heard of. Somewhat to my surprise there were a few really fast replies and enthousiastic encouragements.

It seems I was not alone, it seems I should've gotten of my lazy ass months ago. Change is in the air it seems, the autumn rains have started, the summer's over, let's get a move on boys and girls!!

Why Pebble?

Pebble as my blogger, a choice, a must, a miracle?

Why Blog?

Well, someone recently started a discussion about relevance on the web. We had a short talk about it and from my own arguments I realised that I wasn't putting my savvy knowledge into pratice.

One of the most powerfull ways for google to learn about the relevance of a site/page/topic is by analyzing links. One of the most powerfull ways we, the people of the web, have to control this relevance is by creating those links.

And this is why I had to start my own blog. More than ever I realised that my opinion counts, when google starts counting links, I should have my favourite, most usefull sources linked and what better place to do this than a blog...

Why Pebble?

There were some requirements I had towards my blog.

  • No database, I have my own personal vendetta against the use of databases
  • Must be Java, I think Java is somewhat more elegant as a choice of webapplications, and I could hack it if I want since I know Java :)
  • Semantic (x)html compliant results

And if that didn't do it, than there's this final small insignificant name issue. I'm a sucker for fate and poetry I suppose.

The reason I start this blog is to make my own little ripples in the pond. What does one throw into the pond to start the ripples? That's right, a Pebble.

What's the expression again, hook, line and sinker?

What's coming?

Well, the next dish on the menu is a nice new topic, "Until html freezes over".

I want to help some of my server-side oriented colleagues to learn about some comon, but often overlooked, client-side issues. I'll be shadowing that effort on my own blog in english just so that the rest of the world can hopefully benefit from this effort as well...
